Sarah Jessica Parker "Bitten" Fashion Line - Throw Away Clothing

We certainly want to give credit where credit is due and love to see fashion bargains. However, we want style and quality fashion bargains. Since we heard about Sarah Jessica Parker's venture into the world of fashion we wondered just how she was going to give us decent clothing for less than $20.

Here is a quote from Brandweek "The “Bitten” line will consist of some 500 clothing items and accessories, including knit shirts, wool and cashmere sweaters, dresses, lingerie, jeans, jewelry and footwear. Prices will range from $7.98 to $19.98."

Cashmere for under $20? We were intrigued.

We like her idea. Affordable well-made American sportswear. Then we saw her line on Oprah and were not impressed. It really is dull and unimaginative. The clothes that were modeled on Oprah had very few pops of color and looked cheap. It didn't work for us. We wondered if her Sex and the City character would have given up her Blahnik's and Prada to wear this line.

Here are a few of the styles as shown on Oprah:

We think it's laughable that SJP says "every woman deserves a great black dress", like Bitten's cocktail dress with grosgrain ribbon. We want to see SJP wear this to the next cocktail party she attends and we want to see the photo appear in Vogue.

This dress shrieks "cheap" - just look at the fabric! We don't know any women who can wear fabric this clingy.

Again, we want to give credit where credit is due and there was one standout in the Bitten collection, this adorable Houndstooth coat. But what can we expect as far as wearability for $19.98? No thanks.

Before you read further remember "Everything in the collection comes in sizes 2–22."

Here is a post from the blog HipCandy:

Which brings me to what I didn't much like about the line. Some of the pieces are cut small, similar to a true designer cut. Her jeans especially. I'm normally a size 6 sometimes an 8, but I had to go up to a size 12 in her ankle zip cropped jeans.

And an anonymous reply from that same site:

Went to S&B yesterday here in NC... what a big let down!!!! I wear a size 12 ... I am 5'7 about 160 lbs and I couldn't even fit into a size 16!!! The tees were cute but some of them (in the same size) were cut WAY differently. I bought a black shirt w/ white polka dots... brought it home .. tried it on... as I buttoned each button the buttons feel OFF!! Then I bought a cute little brown leather-ish bag.. had to bring it back b/c it had a REALLY bad odor... no one in my office could figure out what the smell was in my office.. it was the PURSE still in the S&B bag! It smells like gasoline. (I noticed the smell in the store but thought it was something in the store) Needless to say I love SJP but this line was a big let down for me. I would rather shop on clearance at the GAP then buy any of her clothing.

We'll never like this line because it is so cheap. We have always found in the past when we spend money on clothes that you get what you pay for. We've bought $19.99 shirts and worn them and washed them once to have the seams pucker and pull and buttons fall off. It will be interesting to see how this line fares after all the initial hoopla when women actually start wearing it.

We were startled when we saw SJP pushing this line on the Today show. We've never seen her look so glum. With her usual blond flowing tresses dulled down and flat against her head, wearing minimal makeup and a somber gray dress (that we can only assume was from her collection) this certainly isn't the SJP we're used to seeing. We guess she was trying to make herself seem more like the type of women she's trying to appeal to with this fashion line.

We're not sure this collection isn't actually an evil plot by SJP to keep American women poorly dressed.

Still interested? The Bitten fashion line will be sold exclusively at Steve & Barry's.
